Every school day, more than 100 dedicated Nutrition Services team members work behind the scenes to prepare and serve about 10,000 healthy, delicious breakfasts and lunches across the Waukee Community School District. By the end of the school year, we’ll have proudly served approximately 2 million meals to our students.

From complete, balanced meals to fresh veggie bars and single-item a la carte choices, students at every grade level enjoy nutritious meals with plenty of variety. Whether they prefer hot entrees or cold, protein-packed alternatives, there’s something for every appetite.

Meal variety evolves as students grow:

  • Elementary students can choose between hot meals or a “Kydzable” pack, which may include items like cheese sticks, yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, and sandwiches.
  • Middle schoolers enjoy Kydzables or a deli bar with wraps and fresh salads.
  • High school students can build a complete meal at our fresh veggie bar with added proteins — and for those who enjoy bold flavor, we offer a range of spices to customize their plate.

Our staff ensures that our meals meet federal standards. We proudly offer every student one reimbursable breakfast and/or lunch per day, regardless of meal account balance. (Reimbursable breakfast: entrée, fruit or 100% fruit juice, and milk; reimbursable lunch: entrée, vegetables, fruit, and milk) That’s why all our efforts align with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Nutrition Standards, which include:

  • Age-appropriate calorie portions
  • A variety of colorful vegetables (including dark greens, red/orange veggies, and legumes)
  • Whole-grain-rich options
  • Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored or plain)

Nutrition Services Programs

Our Nutrition Team leads programs to support student wellness, encourage healthy habits, and bring fresh, local foods to our schools. From hands-on learning with Farm to School to a summer meal program, these efforts make nutrition accessible for all students. Explore the programs below to see how we’re growing a healthier future.

Farm to School

This program brings fresh, local food and fun learning experiences to Waukee CSD students. Each school can choose what works best for them — like offering local food in the lunchroom, trying new foods, visiting farms, learning in the classroom, planting gardens, and more. These programs help students build healthy habits and support local farmers and businesses. Learn more on our Farm to School page.

Harvest of the Month

Each month, as part of our Farm to School program, we feature fresh, local produce from Iowa farms in all of our school cafeterias. This effort is called Harvest of the Month. It gives students a chance to try nutritious, locally grown foods—and it’s one way we support our local farmers and communities.

TryDay Friday

It’s important for our students to try new fruits and vegetables, no matter if they are in kindergarten or 12th grade. TryDay Friday offers that opportunity during one Friday of each month. Here’s what’s in store for the 2025-26 school year:

  • September 12: Golden kiwi
  • October 3: Colorful cauliflower
  • November 7: Rutabaga sticks
  • December 19: Snow peas
  • January 9: Apricots
  • February 13: Parsnip sticks or turnip sticks
  • March 27: Kiwi berries
  • April 24: Kumquats
  • May 22: Plums

*Dates and items may change based on availability and delivery schedules.

Summer Lunch Program

Picnic & Play is our free summer meal program, open to all children and teens 18 and under. Held at select locations across the community, this program helps ensure kids continue to receive healthy, nutritious meals even when school is out. All meals must be eaten onsite as part of federal program guidelines.

School Wellness Committee

Our Nutrition team leads the District School Wellness Committee, which is a group of volunteers who meet regularly to review our District wellness policy, explore improvements, and support nutrition effort. The group discusses nutrition education, physical activity, food marketing, and nutrition standards. You can get involved on our volunteer page.
