Get Involved

We welcome and encourage volunteers in our facilities! Volunteer to help our District build strong partnerships with students, parents, the community, and businesses. Our volunteers are viewed as role models who help create a progressive and inclusive school program.

The safety of our students and staff is our District’s top priority. For that reason, all prospective volunteers must complete a volunteer form. The form takes about five minutes to finish and must be done before volunteering with our District.

2025-26 Waukee CSD Volunteer Form

Once you complete the volunteer form, you will be allowed to volunteer at any Waukee CSD facility for the school year. Volunteers will work in a non-paid function, serving under the discretion and supervision of Waukee CSD professional staff. Please remember, even after you are approved, you will still need to bring your driver’s license to enter the school. It’s a requirement to scan all visitors through our visitor management system, Visitor Aware.

If you are applying to be an activities/athletic volunteer, you must complete and submit an employment application for the vacancy.

Background Check Requirements for Volunteers

Volunteer Type One:

  • A volunteer who is working one-on-one with a student.
  • A volunteer who is working with limited supervision or alone with students.
  • Visitors who will be among students during the school day, including parents/guardians who are helping with fall, winter, and spring classroom parties.
  • A volunteer who is accompanying students on a field trip.
  • Procedure: If you fall within one of these areas, please complete a volunteer form before the opportunity. Once approved, your name will appear on Waukee CSD-approved volunteer list. You must still bring your driver’s license to enter the school. It’s a requirement to scan all visitors through our visitor management system.

Volunteer Type Two:

  • A volunteer who is accompanying students on an overnight field trip who has completed the volunteer form.
  • An activities/athletic volunteer hired by the District.
  • Procedure: HR will send a background check form for you to complete. If you’re not approved, you’ll be notified by the District HR department.
  • Visitors who stay in the office.
  • Visitor who is only at the school to have lunch with their child.
  • A visitor who attends our school for activities open to all parents of an entire school classroom. (i.e., concerts, classroom open houses)
  • Procedure: Please check in at the office.

Frequently Asked Questions for Volunteers

To volunteer at a specific school, please contact the building directly after completing the volunteer form.

To ensure the safety of all students, Waukee CSD requires any non-employee who has access to students and the school building during the school day to comply with the School Board Policy.

If you are approved, you will be placed on the approved volunteer/visitor list for our staff. If you have not been approved, you will either receive a letter requesting the detailed police report related to your arrest, or you will be provided a letter indicating you have been denied approval.

While a court might determine the conduct was not illegal, some individuals do not receive a conviction as a result of technicalities of the law and/or if charges are dropped. In some of these circumstances, the individual actually committed the illegal act but is not being held legally responsible. Therefore, the actual conduct of the individual, particularly for an arrest related to an act of aggression, is reviewed as documented in a police report, and a decision is made to ensure student safety based on the conduct, not the conviction.

Ways to Volunteer at Waukee CSD

Parent Teacher Organization – PTO

The PTO Board is a collaboration of parent, teacher, and staff volunteers. We believe the team effort of a parent-teacher organization offers the best possible learning environment for children. PTOs are tasked with:

  • Providing additional resources and support for teachers and staff.
  • Holding fundraisers for supplemental educational materials and experiences.
  • Supporting projects which will benefit students in the home, in the community, and in the school.
  • Fostering a spirit of cooperation between parents and teachers to assist in and enhance the student’s education.

Waukee CSD School Wellness Committee

Our Waukee CSD School Wellness Committee meets in the morning once a month to discuss the policy, potential changes, and how we can continue to improve our nutritional efforts across the district. Staff, students, parents, or community members are welcome to join! Please complete this form to be added to our School Wellness Committee mailing list and committee meeting invitations (via Google Meet).

The committee was created as part of our Waukee Community School District Wellness Policy in 2006. The policy encompasses nutrition education and promotion, physical activity, food marketing, and nutrition guidelines for all foods sold to students.

WATCH D.O.G.S.®

WATCH D.O.G.S.® (Dads of Great Students) is a family and community engagement educational initiative. These fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other father figures volunteer for a day to provide a positive male role model for students. WATCH D.O.G.S.® can play games with students, work on math facts, read with students, and so much more! You also have lunch with your child.

Sign up

You can sign up for any half-day that is available Monday-Friday. At some schools, you must wear a WATCH D.O.G.S.® t-shirt or a WATCH D.O.G.S.® sticker. You can borrow one from us for the day, or you can purchase your t-shirt online. If you purchase your own, please purchase the white or gray short-sleeved shirt.
