Two students working on a project. At Waukee Community School District, we’re proud to be a destination district — welcoming families through open enrollment who seek opportunity, excellence, and joy! The District handles the placement of students who enter the District through open enrollment. Due to state law, open enrollment applications must be submitted to both the resident and the receiving district by the first Monday in March of the enrolling year.

How to Apply for Open Enrollment

There are two steps to complete if you’re applying to enter Waukee CSD without living within the District boundaries.

Once you’ve submitted these two items, you’ll hear from our enrollment team about the next steps to continue enrollment.

Open Enrollment Deadlines

As outlined by the Department of Education
  • March 1, 2025: Last day to apply for open enrollment for grades 1-12 for 2025-26
  • Early July, 2025: Open enrollment begins for all students for 2026-27
  • Sept. 1, 2025: Last day to apply for kindergarten open enrollment for 2025-26
  • March 2, 2026: Last day to apply for open enrollment for grades 1-12 for 2026-27
  • Early July, 2026: Open enrollment opens for all students for 2027-28
  • Sept. 1, 2026: Last day to apply for kindergarten open enrollment for 2026-27

Open enrollment is based on several factors:

  • Classroom space
  • Appropriate special education programs
  • Student behavioral factors
  • Other items, based on District discretion and state law

If a family moves outside our District but would like their student to continue attending under open enrollment (commonly referred to as the “continuation rule”), we’re happy to share that these requests are not subject to our insufficient classroom space policy.
