Timberline Students Return from National Science Bowl Competition

A team of Timberline School students is back from competing in the National Science Bowl in the Washington, D.C. area. They qualified for the competition after claiming victory at the regional competition earlier this school year. The team includes 8th graders: Krish Joshi, Neil Nallabirudu, Ishani Atluri, Adwaiyth Muthuranam, and Evan Midtlyng.

The group worked hard for months to prepare for the tournament.

“It takes lots of commitment and time to study. The science bowl competition covers almost all of science, so you really can never ‘finish’ studying. I studied whenever I had any time; up to multiple hours a day. For example, using methods like watching videos to reading textbooks. The main thing I want to say is — that all the effort and hard work you put in is directly related to the results you get. Hard work always pays off, and that’s exactly what happened with my team,” Ishani Atluri says.

Current coach and longtime science teacher Julie Stevens says the group ended the competition with four wins and four losses. The team was victorious against the Alaska, New York, Tennessee, and West Virginia teams. They also had respectful losses to teams from North Carolina and last year’s Championship team from Bellevue, Washington.

“These students are really on to something special here. I couldn’t be any prouder of or happier for them! They are self-motivated and work very well together as a team. They are eager to continue to improve their knowledge and skills so they can hopefully return to compete in the high school division in future years,” Stevens says.

The students agree about one additional perk of the competition.

“The trip to D.C. was fun because we participated in a lot of different fun activities and met new people,” Neil Nallabirdu says.

“I like the trip to D.C. and encountering and meeting other students in the student lounge,” Krish Joshi says.

Besides competing and meeting new friends, students also enjoyed sightseeing. They visited Ford’s theater, the Lincoln Memorial, the World War 2 Memorial, the Washington Monument, and the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum.
