Waukee Northwest Wins First Girls Tennis Title
The Northwest High School girls tennis team won the 2025 State Girls Team Tennis Championship, defeating defending champion Dowling Catholic, 5-1. It marks the first girls state tennis title in Waukee Community School District history.
After a quarterfinal win over Bettendorf, the Wolves beat Johnston, 5-2, in the semifinal round. In that match, Northwest earned victories from junior Lexi Moen, sophomores London Taylor and Mia Deines, and freshman Ella Steffensmeier. A 6-1, 6-1 doubles win by London Taylor and Mia Deines clinched the match, sending the Wolves to the final.
In an all-CIML “final four,” Dowling defeated Valley to advance to the championship.
In the final, Northwest secured singles wins from junior Lexi Moen, sophomores Riley Hilton, Taylor and Deines before freshman Kate Osier clinched the title with a 7-5, 7-6 victory. The five singles wins sealed the championship before doubles play began.
The state tennis championship caps a successful nine-day stretch for Northwest girls sports. The Wolves also won a state championship in track and field, and the girls golf team wrapped up their season by earning a state runner-up trophy.
