Waukee CSD Student Named Finalist in National Playwriting Competition

IMG 8341 (1)Lizz Kratky, an incoming tenth grade student at Waukee High School, is earning national attention for her compelling storytelling. Her original play was selected as a top 20 finalist in the #ENOUGH: Plays to End Gun Violence competition, rising to the top among submissions from students across the country.

“I love theater and I love writing,” Lizz said. “But it never really occurred to me that I could just write a play. So when I saw a chance to do this, I knew I had to try.”

As a finalist, her work was read and reviewed by a panel of distinguished judges, including Pulitzer Prize-winning and Tony-nominated playwrights, New York Times best-selling authors, and former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords.

Remarkably, this is the first play Lizz has ever written, making the recognition even more meaningful.

Supportive Theatre Community

Much of her passion and growth as a writer and performer has been shaped by her time in the Waukee Community School District theater department.

“I’ve met some of the most amazing people in Waukee theater arts. Everyone is so supportive, welcoming, and kind,” she said. “Waukee has taught me so many things, both on the stage and off. There are plenty of student-directed and student-run events, which have given me the chance to connect with others and grow. I’m so glad I get to be part of such an amazing community!”

Educators Who Inspire

She also credits her teachers for helping her through the submission process.

“Mrs. Thorsen helped me submit my play! I also had support from Mr. Jorgensen, who gave me the idea to enter the contest after sharing information in the Waukee theater arts newsletter,” she said.

Lizz’s accomplishment not only highlights her individual talent but also reflects the supportive environment and opportunities available through Waukee’s thriving performing arts programs.
