Get to know Principal Spiess
On behalf of our amazing staff, welcome to South Middle School! My name is Joe, and I am honored to serve as the SMS principal.
I grew up in Minnesota and graduated from Totino-Grace High School in 2001. I came to Iowa by attending Drake University for my bachelor’s degree. I have continued my formal education by earning my master’s degree from ISU, and my specialist degree and PhD from Drake.
I began my education career by teaching high school math at Des Moines Lincoln High School. After working in the DMPS curriculum department for a year, I moved into building administration at three different buildings. I came to Waukee Schools for the 2022-23 school year as the SMS principal, and am excited and grateful to begin my 21st year in education!
My wife and I married in 2011, and we have three school-age children who attend Waukee schools. When not working, I enjoy being with my family, playing/watching sports, performing arts, and traveling. My side hustle is refereeing soccer, and I can also be found coaching just about anything my kids are playing. My family lives in Waukee, and I am thrilled to continue serving the SMS community!
